Nordic walking - walking with poles

  •  Nordic walking, in combination with a lower calorie diet, can help you maintain and even lose weight.

  • Nordic walking uses upper body muscles, as well as those used for    walking. This has been described by scientists as the near perfect activity.

  • Nordic walking is social, fun and easy to learn.

  • Nordic walking feels light and effortless and helps to improve muscle and joint function.

  • Nordic walking is endorsed by many physiotherapists to reduce impact on the joints, perfect for rehabilitation.

  • Nordic walking promotes good stature, co-ordination, balance and natural rhythm.

Mental well-being and nature-based activities

A path through green trees

Green Physical Activity

  • Since 2003 the health & well-being benefits of outdoors nature-based activities are becoming increasingly significant and there is a positive association between green space and health. Green physical activity has been shown to demonstrate improvements in both mental and physiological outcomes. These include decreased levels of depression, less tension, increased self-esteem and improved mood. MIND (2007) reported that green physical activity, such as Nordic walking in York  and in the countryside green spaces may have direct and positive effects on well-being, such as reducing stress and increasing resilience, thus reducing mental fatigue and improving how we focus, think and concentrate.

  • Michelle's Nordic walking sessions can include mindfulness & visualisation activities. These are two  powerful, evidence-based techniques to improve mental well-being. Our  minds can be cluttered with issues from the past and anxieties about the  future, reducing our emotional resilience.  Mindfulness works by  focusing you on the present moment and is known to reduce stress &  tension & help control anxiety. Furthmore, physical activity  produces nature's own 'highs' called endorphins, as well as giving  useful 'time-out' periods from stress; enhancing the feel good effect!
